About Merchant of Malice Head
The catacombs were not frightening to him. The decaying bodies did not disturb or disgust, the stench of rotting flesh did not sour in his nose. Instead he felt comforted by dismal surroundings. He knew the passageways by heart, knew each river of sewage like the familiar lines in his palm. A few times he had been seen, in the soft glow of torch light he saw their faces twist in terror. Anger flared inside him, rejected and shunned, disdain grew inside him like an unruly brier. Finally the monster could not stand it anymore. “They know nothing,” he screamed, beating his fists against the walls, quickly he grasped around, collecting bones and loose sculls. He fashioned himself a dark and evil mask. That day the monster left the sewers, flanked by an army of rats and crows. History named his reign as the bubonic plague, but those who believe in monsters remember the Merchant of Malice.
