About Hellequin Severed Head
As far as harlequins go, Chester was the best the kingdom had ever seen. His jests were unbeatable; his puns were clever and pointed. He brought laughter to all but none more than the Queen. History records that King Henry killed his wife because she could not bear him sons, but the real story is one of lust, jealousy and betrayal. It was the jester, the fool who had stolen the queen’s heart. Each day when King Henry would meet with his councilors the secret lovers would meet in the queen’s chamber. The two shared a passionate love affair that resulted in the queen’s pregnancy. The kingdom rejoiced at the promise of an are, and though their meetings were becoming more and more risky, the lovers could not keep away from one another. One day, it the final month of the queen’s pregnancy, King Henry stole into her chamber to check on his sleeping wife. There he found the lovers intertwined. In a fit the King seized Chester. Humiliated the King refused to admit the betrayal of the queen. Instead he tried Chester for theft. The sentence was beheading, but first his eyes were plucked from his head and motley patterns were carved into his skin. King Henry watched and remained the severed head, “hellequin.”
