Mermaids are frequently featured and references in popular culture, including media such as literature, television, films, and artwork. The most famous mermaid that pretty much everybody has heard of is probably Ariel from Disney's The Little Mermaid, which is based on Hans Christian Andersen's 1837 fairy tale of the same name. Mermaids are also a central theme in the Alice Hoffman novel entitled Aquamarine, which was also made into a feature film. Popular fairy tales such as Peter Pan involve mermaids, as well as movies such as Splash and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. In Splash, Tom Hanks falls in love with a woman who turns out to be a mermaid. In the fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Jack Sparrow runs into several mermaids while on his quest to find the Fountain of Youth.

Basically, mermaids are creatures that are often very beautiful, whose bodies consist of a human upper body and the tail of a fish. These creatures are usually associated with sirens, which are similar creatures who have the body of a woman, with the feathers of a bird and scaly feet. The only major difference is that sirens are commonly associated with temptation and death. In Ancient Greek mythology, sirens used enchanting music to lure nearby sailors to their island, where they would shipwreck and eventually die. The most famous reference to sirens is in Homer's Odyssey, in which they are depicted as the epitome of temptation.
