Jane Levy and Bruce Campbell Talk Evil Dead Remake

Previously, we reported that Lily Collins was expected to star in the Evil Dead remake. However, according to HitFix.com, Lily Collins is out and Jane Levy, star of the TV series Suburgatory, is now taking over the role.

Introducing: Jane Levy.

In an article recently released on TheInsider, Jane Levy expressed her feelings on the project: I’m so excited, she said. I’m a big fan of the original. To me its the scariest movie, ever. But this one is really different. They’ve changed it a lot, but its still a pretty gory movie. My mom probably cant see it.

While Levys claim of gore may scare away her mother, diehard fans are still worried that the remake will tarnish the originals image. FrightCatalog.com fans have already openly shown their distaste through comments made on articles previously covering the films updates.

But hold on a minute. Before people continue whipping themselves into a foamy rage, look at who’s producing and lending their creative direction to the remake: Bruce Campbell (star of the original) and Sam Raimi (writer and director of the original), the two heavy hitters who made the original such an astonishing piece of work [citation]. There was no cloak-and-dagger plan to oust Bruce Campbell from the role as lead actor. Quite the contrary, in fact, for Bruce has been part of the project all along.

We are going to remake it. The first one,Bruce told BloodDisgusting, back in November of 2011. And people are a little iffy about that [but] we wanted to remake a movie with better effects and we’re better at telling stories now Theres no Ash character and that pisses people off [but] we didnt want to have the direct comparison. I wouldnt want to put an actor in that position.

Bruce Campbell

So we have a level-headed Bruce Campbell using his cinematic experience to guide the films direction and a star who is excited to take on the role of a new Evil Dead lead character. But can we really expect a thrilling remake of what is one of the most iconic cult classics of all time? Lets go back to Bruce:

You can expect to have a damn scary horror movie, said Bruce Campbell, to TheInsider. Theres no Ash character The Evil Book is going to torment a new set of kids, so its a remake, or a re-imagining or a re-whatever word you want to use. Its going to be re-scary.

Not everyone will agree, though, that the original was meant to be a frightening experience. Sure, Evil Dead was pitched as a horror film, but the low-budget backing of the film made for some hilarious moments. And according to what Jane Levy told TheInsider, she agrees:  I think the humor in the first one came from the special effects of the time. I dont know that they meant it to be funny this [remake] is not funny. Its definitely dark.

No one can deny that we live in an age of rehashed, recycled, and remade films. (There are 10 Halloween films. Nightmare on Elm Street was remade in 2010. The Thing saw a half-assed prequel emerge in 2011. The list goes on and on.) But, based on what Campbell and Levy said, the Evil Dead remake/re-imagining/re-whatever may be a closer-to-home telling of the original story, without the low-budget special effects hindering the film’s vision.

If Campbell and Raimi are seriously putting their necks on the line with this remake, all we can do is cheer them on and hope they don’t ruin their reputations. The film is rumored to hit theaters on April 12, 2013.

Good luck, guys.

Evil Dead Remake: Out With The Ash, In With The Mia

When we previously discussed the Evil Dead remake, the writers were still aiming to have the character David as the star replacement for the original Ash. According to news released yesterday by Ghost House and Mandate Pictures, however, his sister Mia stole the limelight and will now wear the mantle as Ashs replacement.

The decision makes sense: no living male can match the manly, chainsaw-wielding imagery of Bruce Campbell’s Ash. But a female – that’s a whole different story. A woman can create her own image and personality as Ash, one that may even rival the original popularity of Bruce Campbell’s Ash.

Lilly Collins (The Blind Side, Priest, Mirror Mirror) is scheduled to play the part of Mia in the Evil Dead remake, which should hit cinema theaters on April 12, 2013.

Here’s a recent photo of Lilly:

According to BloodyDisgusting, In this version, the story centers on five friends (David, Natalie, Eric, Olivia, and Mia) holed up at a remote cabin where they discover a Book of the Dead with a demonic force unleashed possessing each until only one is left to fight for survival.

Mias character has a background of drug use, a habit that recently caused a nonfatal overdose. Mia goes with her friends to the cabin to escape from all temptations of drug relapse. Since she is struggling with sobriety, none of the other friends believe her claims of seeing and experiencing paranormal activity, like trees coming alive and attacking her.

The Evil Dead remake begins filming this March, in New Zealand.

Evil Dead Remake: More Horror Than Humor?

Not every horror film is designed to make you cringe beneath a shower of blood and gore. Some simply want to make you laugh, while showering you with blood and gore. The Evil Dead series, the inspiration for so many Halloween props, is a perfect example of a horror comedy done right, and now the original Evil Dead is scheduled to see a remake.

Thats right Sam Raimis original Evil Dead film is set to see a remake well, actually, the movie officials are calling it a reimagining, not a remake.

Whats the difference?

A remake would mean an exact copy of the original film, just updated for modern audiences. But a reimagining means the directors / writers can alter the original story. In this case, the Evil Dead reimagining will have no Ash no Bruce Campbell. (A recent release of news states that Bruce Campbell will have a small cameo, not a major role, at the end of the film.)

We’ll miss your crazy face, Ash.

Here’s the current cast of characters set for the reimagining:

David (Ash’s replacement) Hero, sibling to Mia, married to hot chick.

Mia David’s sister, fighting a drug addiction, suffers from death of her and David’s mother.

Eric David’s friend, cocky.

Plot synopsis: The characters travel to the infamous cabin in the woods from the original Evil Dead, when a storm forces them indoors. Eric finds the Necronomicon and convinces the others to read passages from it. Mia begins to go nuts. The other characters assume its just her suffering from drug withdrawals. But then something moves outside the cabin.

The original cabin of death.

Director Federico Alvarez claims the film will focus more on the horror of the original Evil Dead, straying far away from the comedy of Army of Darkness and Evil Dead II. Part of this stray can be seen with the replacement of Ashs character. If fans of the original Evil Dead saw an Ash character, they might expect the humorous Ash they fell in love with from Army of Darkness. This new hero, David, allows for a focus on the horror. We’ll have to wait and see how this choice turns out.

The release date of the Evil Dead reimagining is scheduled for April 12, 2013.
