Due to the show’s day-time schedule, the show amassed more episodes (1,225) in its five-year lifespan than most other science-fiction/fantasy genre television shows, including Doctor Who and the entire Star Trek franchise. In 2007, Dark Shadows ranked #23 on TV Guide’s Top Cult Shows Ever list.

Now, nearly fifty years later, the series is set to see a silver-screen revival, with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp leading the theatrical project. This is another of many films Burton and Depp have worked on together, previously including: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Corpse Bride (2005), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), and Alice in Wonderland (2010).

The Dark Shadows cinematic release is scheduled for May 11, 2012 – so only just around the corner. Not much is known about the actual plotline of the film, other than the general plot synopsis: “A gothic-horror tale centering on the life of vampire Barnabas Collins and his run-ins with various monsters, witches, werewolves and ghosts. Based on the cult TV series.”

And, of course, Depp has again taken to visually transforming himself for the role of a character. We saw him become madness and mayhem as the Mad Hatter, eccentricity and genius as Willy Wonka, and horror and despair as Sweeny Todd. Now Depp brings us the sophisticated elegance of a Victorian vampire, as Barnabas Collins.

But Depp’s thrill of becoming a character goes further than merely playing dress-up. In fact, Colleen Atwood, the woman behind Depp’s Barnabas Collins costume, says, “[Depp] has it in contract that he gets to keep all his costumes.” Each and every costume Johnny Depp has ever worn for a film is archived in his Santa Monica showroom.

Will the silver-screen adaptation of Dark Shadows attract the same cult status as the original series? Come May 11, 2012, we’ll find out.

As stated on our Facebook yesterday, the FrightCatalog gang is down here in Houston, Texas, covering Halloween Expo 2012. But since we’d be nothing without our faithful customers, we want to share the experience with you! So, here’s the first update of the convention:

The Expo opened at 8 AM, but they wouldn’t let anyone in until 9 AM, so we all just stood around for an hour. Nothing really happened. Some people mingled, attractive models in skimpy costumes walked through the crowd, and that’s pretty much it. Here’s a video of the entrance:

Once inside, I wandered over to the California Costume Collections booth, where I found this astonishing vampire mask and wings costume:

Yup, the wings move on their own. It blew my mind how cool these would be to wear around. Technology is definitely entering the Halloween industry, and I cannot wait to see what else is in store.

Each kit includes the necessary makeup and accessories to transform your face into a ghoulish horror, as seen on the models above the displayed kits. Simple, easy-to-apply, and perfect for any zombie-loving Halloween fan.

But enough about California Costume Collections and their sweet products. I wanted to find some high quality weapons, and the Charades booth definitely delivered:

As you can see in the video, I squeezed the hell out of that foam hammer and it didn’t budge an inch. A Charades representative said they make the weapons specifically to give the wielder some heft, because “lightweight weapons don’t feel awesome enough.” The hammer, for example, has a metal rod running through the handle. No cheap materials, no unsatisfied customers, that’s the way to run a Halloween business.

Next I set my sights on the Forum Novelties booth, but I barely made it away from Charades when this terrifying attraction caught my attention:

That’s a 15′ clown costume worn by the president of Beyond Sales. The costume is fully moveable – wrists, arms, head, back, legs – and the president claims to have snowboarded down a mountain while wearing it. On the table is a DVD player showing clips of him rollerblading around Vancouver, Washington.

Then I finally made my way over to Forum Novelties, where they showed me their latest line of Halloween monster masks:

I had a good laugh when I saw the Obama mask at the end of the line. A political monster is still a monster, I guess, depending on your views.

And lastly, while heading away from the booths to write up this post, I stumbled upon what I can only call the “Demon Baby Ring of Death”:

But Twilight is a singular occurrence, right? Vampires and werewolves are the only ones to have felt the soft, seductive hands of the romance genre, right? I mean, there’s no way someone could write a financially successful romance novel about, say, a zombie, right?

Wrong.

This is where I introduce you to Warm Bodies, a zombie romance novel.

The book.

Here’s the plot, according to Wikipedia:

“R is a zombie. After a zombie apocalypse, he slowly moves through an America made up of collapsed buildings, rusted cars, shattered glass, and hollowed-out high-rises. He can speak only in grunts and simple syllables and craves human brains to get high on the memories they contain. After eating the brain of a suicidal teen, R is overcome with love for the teen’s companion, Julie Grigio. R rescues Julie from certain death by his zombie pack and takes her back to his lair. She eventually leaves, and R follows her to back to Citi Stadium, the largest remaining human habitation.”

Somehow, the book has earned enough attention to garnish a film adaptation, which is expected to hit theaters this year. While I applaud the concept of zombies eating human brains to get high off memories, I cannot express any joy toward this novel or film. Zombies are the over-milked fad of recent years, and now the genre comes face-to-face with romance.

The movie.

If anything, let’s hope this movie kills the zombie fad and we can move onto the next horror icon to become popular, whored out, and then mixed with romance.

But according to recent news released on HollywoodReporter.com, Columbia Pictures is now closing a deal with Darren Lemke, the writer behind Jack the Giant Killer, to pen the big-screen adaptation of these children’s horror books.

The producers behind the film are Neal Moritz, along with Sony-based Original Film group, and Deborah Forte, a member of Scholastic Entertainment.

Known for its classic sci-fi/horror stories, Goosebumps has helped bring horror to countless children, without stuffing in the usual horror tropes of gore, sex, and blood. Adult horror books often leave whole sections to describing dead bodies and body parts, while Goosebumps seeks to make its audience laugh, not cringe.

While it is unclear as to which of the Goosebumps books will see big-screen action, it is clear that these studios are taking their time with its creation. One can only hope that the finished product is worth the Goosebumps name.

Tuesdays, though, are transitional days, carrying you from the dreadful start of the week to the glorious midweek hump known as Wednesday. The only other transitional day is Thursday, which has the looming boon of Friday being only 24-hours away, followed quickly by the weekend. No, Tuesdays are the worst of the weekdays – the epitome of a nine-to-five lifestyle; the bane of an exciting life.

Thankfully, we here at FrightCatalog.com share this distaste for Tuesdays, so we’re always on the lookout for something to put a pep in our Tuesday step. Today, on this Tuesday, we stumbled upon a video that crams sixty-four horror films into a five-minute trailer.

Give it a gander, let the familiar horror films flow through your fleshy eyes, and remember, the weekend is only three more days away.

Sierra/Affinity and their partner Incentive Filmed Entertainment will fund and produce the project, while William Brent Bell will continue his work as the film’s director. Seeing as how The Devil Inside is currently sitting at a 6% on RottenTomatoes.com, maybe this time Bell will actually make a good movie and not rely on a heavy advertisement campaign to produce sales.

According to Variety.com, “Details are under wraps other than the style of filmmaking the team brought to The Devil Inside [will] be applied to another horror mythology.” So if you hated the found-footage style of The Devil Inside, you may want to stay clear of the next project created by Bell and Peterman.

In addition, the same producers that worked on The Devil Inside will see a return with this new project, which includes Steven Schneider, Matthew Peterman, and Morris Paulson.

The CEO of Sierra/Affinity, Nick Meyer, said, “From day one we have been huge fans of this filmmaking team and the way they have crafted a unique movie-going experience with The Devil Inside. These are filmmakers we know and trust and they bring an original voice and style to our next project that will once again introduce audiences to a new expectation of what one can define as a genre film.”

Steven Schneider, one of the executive producers for The Devil Inside, said, “It’s a little premature. Everybody is processing what happened – the remarkable weekend we had – and feeling really good about that.” Schneider continued, “Certainly the filmmakers and Lorenzo (di Bonaventura) and I would all love to explore [a sequel] with the studio and I think we believe that there is absolutely the potential to carry forward out storylines from the original. It would be a rather organic and fun process – and one that would lead to great results.”

To give you an idea of this guy’s career history, he also produced Paranormal Activity 3 and Insidious, and he was the executive producer for Paranormal Activity 1 and 2. Basically, the guy loves mediocre horror movies that are hyped to hell and back, causing them to actually produce revenue.

But let’s add some context to what he just said: Lorenzo di Bonaventura was another of the executive producers for The Devil Inside, but di Bonaventura was also the producer for the Transformers franchise and Salt, two financially successful film projects that received mixed reviews from audiences.

These two guys, di Bonaventura and Schneider, are in the film business to make money – that much is clear – but does Schneider really believe that people will want to see a second The Devil Inside film?

They fooled us once with the first film, but they have to be seriously disconnected from reality to believe that they can fool us twice.

To put that 7% into perspective, Twilight received a 49%, and that movie catches all kinds of flak. Someone must have sold their soul – no pun intended – to get The Devil Inside to the #1 spot.

I admit that I did not see the movie this weekend, nor do I plan on seeing it anytime soon. Hell, not even Redbox’s prices are low enough for this film. I watch a horror movie to be scared, not to have the horror come from actually sitting through the film.

But here’s the question: How did a movie this bad, this openly hated by critics, become the #1 seller in the box office? It had no 3-D elements, and there wasn’t a single blue alien fighting to save a tree.

Was it the nearly 4-minute red band trailer? Were people hoping the film would be like The Exorcist? Maybe it was the news of a filmgoer possessed during the premiere of the film. Whatever it was, this film’s box office results were clearly the product of masterful marking skills.

So now I want to hear from our audience members. Did anyone enjoy this film? Would you recommend that your friendly FrightCatalog.com blogger see the film and give an impression?

The two companies have their sights set on Kimberly Pierce as director. Pierce is best known for her work on the 1999 drama / romance / crime film Boys Don’t Cry, which Pierce directed and co-wrote.

Since it has been nearly forty years since the release of the original Carrie, Hollywood has taken it upon themselves to update the film for a new generation. The remake script was written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who recently rewrote Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark on Broadway. Rumors claim that Aguirre-Sacasa wrote the remake as a version of Carrie that is more like the original Stephen King novel.

As long as this remake is nothing like the sequel The Rage: Carrie 2, it may actually turn out to be all right.

The decision makes sense: no living male can match the manly, chainsaw-wielding imagery of Bruce Campbell’s Ash. But a female – that’s a whole different story. A woman can create her own image and personality as Ash, one that may even rival the original popularity of Bruce Campbell’s Ash. (Let’s hope for a female Evil Ash!)

Lilly Collins (The Blind Side, Priest, Mirror Mirror) is scheduled to play the part of Mia in the Evil Dead remake, which should hit cinema theaters on April 12, 2013.

According to BloodyDisgusting, “In this version, the story centers on five friends (David, Natalie, Eric, Olivia, and Mia) holed up at a remote cabin where they discover a Book of the Dead with a demonic force unleashed possessing each until only one is left to fight for survival.”

Mia’s character has a background of drug use, a habit that recently caused a nonfatal overdose. Mia goes with her friends to the cabin to escape from all temptations of drug relapse. Since she is struggling with sobriety, none of the other friends believe her claims of seeing and experiencing paranormal activity, like trees coming alive and attacking her.

The Evil Dead remake begins filming this March, in New Zealand.

In addition, the release said, “In 2012, Paramount’s release slate highlights include ‘World War Z,’ a zombie thriller starring Brad Pitt and directed by Marc Forster, ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation,’ the next installment in the global franchise starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Channing Tatum, a new chapter in the ‘Paranormal Activity’ franchise, and ‘The Dictator,’ starring Sacha Baron Cohen and directed by Larry Charles, the team behind ‘Borat.’”

The original Paranormal Activity film cost only $15,000, though it brought in some $193 million in the worldwide box office. Even with its cheap ghost costumes, people could not get enough. Then, the second film of the series saw its financial backing rise to $3 million, and it earned approximately $177.5 million at the worldwide box office.

Although the third film in the series brought in the least amount of return, there are still enough fans out there to justify a fourth film. The press release did not state when we should expect Paranormal Activity 4 to hit theaters.

According to Fangoria.com, Bryan Fuller, one of the core writers behind the television series Pushing Daisies, is credited with coming up with the reboot’s story. While the original Munsters show focused on campy, wholesome comedy and family ties, The Munsters reboot has its roots in modern-day drama, action-packed suspense, and some goofball silliness. Also, the original was only 30 minutes long, while the reboot is expected to be an hour’s worth of entertainment for each show.

The reboot of The Munsters will see the story centered on Eddie Munster, the pre-teen werewolf with a heart of compassion, who is trying to come to terms with his werewolf transformations.

As for the other characters, Herman Munster is said to be “more of a stud,” who “loves too much.” Lily Munster, the perpetually beautiful matriarch of the family, works at a pet store, where she uses her magic to get the job done quickly. Grandpa Munster is a full-blown vampire, feasting on animals and struggling with a growing urge to consume human blood. Marilyn Munster, the only true human of the family, is the show’s female sex appeal.

The show is expected to air sometime in 2012.

This new script was written by the minds behind the US version of The Office. Various news sources claim the script would tell the tale of the original Ghostbusters handing the business over to a younger generation, thus continuing the series with a new cast of ghost-hunting heroes.

Sony Pictures has already stated that they would feel uncomfortable creating Ghostbusters 3 without Bill Murray. In addition, Sigourney Weaver, one of the original cast members of the previous films, insists she will only join the cast of Ghostbusters 3 if Murray joins, too. Since Murray was originally given the privilege of final approval for the Ghostbusters 3 script, his denial of the script foreshadows the potential death of this sequel.

However, Dan Ackroyd claims the film will be made with or without Bill Murray, whose character Peter Venkman has been hailed as the backbone of the original Ghostbusters films. Sadly, we may never again see Murray don his Ghostbusters costume.

The four-night cruise begins on April 12^th, setting sail from Tampa, Florida, and features movie screenings, a “scream queen” contest, and a “Dance of the Dead.” Tickets start at $699 per person, and more details can be found at the Tides of Torture website.

You ever see movie or show so embarrassingly awkward and unfunny, you physically feel uncomfortable? If you’re like me, you’ll find an excuse to change the television channel, or pretend you need something from another room – any room, really, just somewhere away. Well, that’s how I feel about the trailer for You Can’t Kill Stephen King, a horro film currently in the post-production stage.

Plot synopsis: Six friends head to a small town, where they hope to meet Stephen King, but, instead, they are murdered.

Clearly the trailer is trying to get across that the movie is designed to poke fun at horror films. It’s a meta-film, essentially. But there is a fine line between over-the-top and appropriate, and if this trailer is an indication of what this movie has to offer, it definitely belongs in the over-the-top category. I mean, I wouldn’t even be surprised if Stephen King was the killer.

Will I still see it? Of course.

Why? I want to see if I’m right, that Stephen King is the killer. And if he is, does he die?

While the bunnies got their start as a small solo project, they have exploded into an Internet phenomena, attracting more then 25,000 unique hits every day. All of this popularity caught the attention of Starz Entertainment Group, who purchased the films and moved the bunnies to mainstream media. That’s right – Sam Raimi’s original Evil Dead film is set to see a remake – well, actually, the movie officials are calling it a reimagining, not a remake.

What’s the difference?

A remake would mean an exact copy of the original film, just updated for modern audiences. But a reimagining means the directors / writers can alter the original story. In this case, the Evil Dead reimagining will have no Ash – no Bruce Campbell. (A recent release of news states that Bruce Campbell will have a small cameo, not a major role, at the end of the film.)

Here’s the current cast of characters set for the reimagining:

David (Ash’s replacement) – Hero, sibling to Mia, married to hot chick.

Mia – David’s sister, fighting a drug addiction, suffers from death of her and David’s mother.

Eric – David’s friend, cocky.

Plot synopsis: The characters travel to the infamous cabin in the woods from the original Evil Dead, when a storm forces them indoors. Eric finds the Necronomicon and convinces the others to read passages from it. Mia begins to go nuts. The other characters assume it’s just her suffering from drug withdrawals. But then something moves outside the cabin.

Director Federico Alvarez claims the film will focus more on the horror of the original Evil Dead, straying far away from the comedy of Army of Darkness and Evil Dead II. Part of this stray can be seen with the replacement of Ash’s character. If fans of the original Evil Dead saw an Ash character, they might expect the humorous Ash they fell in love with from Army of Darkness. This new hero, David, allows for a focus on the horror. We’ll have to wait and see how this choice turns out.

The release date of the Evil Dead reimagining is scheduled for April 12, 2013.

The film takes place in Bavaria, during the late fifties. The main character, Maria, stumbles upon the dead body of a woman. The local authorities are then tasked with solving what obviously appears to be a murder case. But as more and more dead women are discovered, along with sightings of unidentified flying objects, the local populace grows unruly. Somehow, this leads to undead aliens arising from the earth, killing lots of people.

I could continue talking about how the film is only available in German, with English subtitles that are more wrong than right; or how the aliens can speak, even though they’re supposed to be dead; or how the romance subplot comes off as forced and odd. But that’s all irrelevant, because even with these faults, I’d pay money to witness a Bavarian village fending off undead aliens.

Rather than ask for Maine residents to scratch up the $140,000 all by themselves, King is actually matching all of the profits donated to the cause. If Maine’s residents were to raise half of the total amount – $70,000 – King would donate the rest.

The donation opportunity arose after federal funding cuts affected heating programs serving residents who are poor, disabled, or elderly. Rather than receiving the usual $55.6 million from the federal government, Maine only received $23 million.

“This economy is terrible and Tabitha and I both worry so much about Bangor because it truly is a working-class town,” King told Bangor Daily News. “We are always looking for ways to help, and right now this is a great need.”

As long as Maine’s residents open their wallets to their neighbors, even if it is only $1, Stephen and Tabitha King will help bring the donation home, literally.

Since Stephen King has helped inspire so many Halloween props and decorations, we wish him the best of luck with his charitable endeavor. (He may even see an anonymous donation from a certain Halloween superstore.)

1941 Chevrolet COE Truck One – Jeepers Creepers

Love it or hate it, Jeepers Creeps is an entertaining horror film. I once watched it on a portable DVD player, in the middle of the desert, under a blanket of stars. Coyotes howled at one point, made me jump. Not sure if I jumped because of the movie or because there were coyotes in the desert. Regardless, the Jeepers Creepers truck is a horrifying spectacle, one that I would never want to see out of my rear-view mirror. It’s smoking anus of brimstone and hate, boiling onto my bumper with a repetitious pounding – a heartbeat of hell.

The Munster Koach – The Munsters

Featured in over twenty episodes throughout The Munsters’ two-year television lifespan, the Munster Koach is an iconic Halloween vehicle that mystifies as much as it entertains. The vehicle was built from three different Model T bodies, and the whole thing measured approximately 18′ long. When I was a young sprout, my dad let me stay up late, way past my mom’s dictated bedtime, and we’d laugh as the Munsters got into all sorts of trouble. The changing staircase was the coolest part, what with it rising and turning into a slide. Of course, I didn’t love it as much as this family: Sandra and Charles McKee of Waxahachie, Texas, built a fully livable “re-creation” of the Munsters home.

1955 Peterbilt 281 Tanker Truck – Duel

Stepping it up from the Jeepers Creepers truck, this Peterbilt 281 was the featured star of the 1971 film Duel. The film focuses on David Mann, a middle-aged man traveling on a two-lane highway in the California desert. David Mann finds himself chased, teased, tortured, hassled, and nearly killed, on numerous occasions, by this Peterbilt. If you’re anything like me, you get anxious when you have to speed past a tanker on the highway. My mind yells, “Don’t merge into me. Don’t merge into me.” Having one purposely try to ram you off the road, that’s terrifying!

1966 Chevrolet Sportvan 108 – Scoopy-Doo

No Halloween vehicle list is complete without the addition of the Mystery Machine. Crammed with four strange adults and a talking dog, this car has seen some adventures. From combating swamp monsters to old men dressed as ghosts, the Mystery Machine is always first on the paranormal scene. Between 1990 and 2002, Universal Studios Florida had a working Mystery Machine that drove around the park. Jinkies!

1958 Plymouth Fury – Christine

The Mystery Machine’s cool. The Jeepers Creepers truck is scary. The Munster Koach is creative. They’re all great cars, honestly. But when it comes to true terror, true fear, no one does it better than Stephen King, which is why Christine makes the top of our Halloween vehicle list. The car kills people, drives itself, and self-repairs any damage. Christine clings to an owner, changing the individual into a cynical abomination of their former self. No other vehicle can top the horror induced by this seemingly innocent Plymouth Fury.

Not only is this costume unique, easy to put together, and affordable, but it is also hilarious. Let’s say you’re attending a Halloween party. Sometime during the night, strip off your shirt, blow a whistle, and start some referee hand signals. Plus, this easily leads to a night of streaking, (which we cannot officially condone, but we would officially laugh at any video of you streaking).

Shards of Glass Cupcakes

As the name suggests, these cupcakes look to have fallen through a window. However, that’s not real glass sticking out of those cupcakes. It’s homemade sugar glass, which is edible and absolutely delicious. Here’s how you make it:

INGREDIENTS

24 cupcakes (any kind), frosted (with canned or homemade frosting)

Sugar Glass:

Nonstick spray

2 cups water

3 1/2 cups sugar

1 cup light corn syrup

1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar

14.5 oz can of dark cherries in water (water, not syrup)

1/4 cup superfine sugar (you can find this in the baking aisle)

1/2 teaspoon lime juice

1 Tablespoon cornstarch

To Make the Glass: 

Line a large cookie sheet with foil and spray with nonstick spray. You want to spray the pan at least 30 minutes prior to using it.

Mix together the water, sugar, corn syrup and cream of tartar in an old saucepan and bring to a boil with a candy thermometer inserted. Let the mixture boil, stirring continuously, until it reaches 300 F. Pour the mixture very quickly and carefully into the lined and oiled pan and let cool.

When the mixture has cooled completely, carefully pop it out of the pan and peel off the foil. Tap it in the center with a hammer or meat mallet to crack it into shards.

To Make the Blood:

Pour the can of cherries (with juice) in a food processor or blender and mix just enough for the cherries to be mostly broken up but not completely smooth. Pour the cherry mixture with the rest of the blood ingredients into a heavy saucepan and heat on medium. Slowly bring to a boil, stirring constantly.

Reduce to a simmer and heat until the cherry mixture has thickened. Allow to cool.

Spoon a blob of “blood” on the center of each cupcake. Dip an edge of a “glass shard” into the blood and insert in the center of the blood.

Dr Jack Kevorkian.

Kevorkian created numerous machines for committing assisted suicide, the most infamous being the Thanatron. To avoid getting too into medical science, here’s a quick rundown on how the Thanatron works: The patient pushes a button, flips a switch, or pulls a cord, and the Thanatron administers barbiturates into the patient’s bloodstream. Once the barbiturates force the individual to sleep, a lethal injection is administered, and the patient passes away in his sleep.

Since Kevorkian passed away this machine has remained dormant within his estate. However, come October 28, 2011, an auction at the New York Institute of Technology offers anyone a chance of owning this machine of assisted suicide. Imagine it sitting in your living room, kitchen, bedroom, or garage, just waiting for someone to say, “What the hell is this thing?” You would be hard-pressed to find more horrid and ghoulish Halloween props.

Plus, a portion of the auction proceed goes to the Kids Kicking Cancer charity fund.

Before Kevorkian passed away, he was asked if he had any regrets about his work. Kevorkian said, “No, no. It’s your purpose [as a] physician. How can you regret helping a suffering patient?”

But wait!

For so many individuals to be terrified about poisoned Halloween candy there would have to be numerous cases of such an event, right? Maybe a friend, or a friend of a friend, knows someone that knew someone that had a neighbor that was killed by rat poison mixed with their cotton candy. That would make sense, because then the person had a direct, or indirect, connection to the incident.

But here’s the truth: Other than one event, which is discussed at the end of the article, there have been no recorded incidents of deliberately poisoned candy during Halloween or any similar occasion.

The key word is “deliberately.” There have been incidents of foreign objects accidentally getting into candy, or people handing out inedible objects, such as gimmick Halloween props that look like candy.

Pain is deliciousness leaving the body.

The potential origins of the deliberately poisoned Halloween candy myth:

In 1964, a housewife gave out inedible objects to children whom she believed were too old to be trick-or-treating. The objects were steel wool, ant buttons, dog biscuits, and so forth. All of the objects were clearly labeled as “poison,” not for human consumption. No children were injured, but the woman went to court and pleaded guilty to endangering children.

In 1970, a 5-year-old boy found and ate his uncle’s heroin. The boy died after a four day coma. To protect the uncle, the family claimed the heroin had been sprinkled onto the child’s Halloween candy.

In 2008, Pokemon Valentine’s Day lollipops were found to contain metal shavings and metal blades.

Joel Best, a University of Delaware sociologist, specializes in candy tampering legends. Best researched newspaper stories that detailed events of candy tampering, and Best found that nearly all of the stories were false or hoaxes created by the child.

Which one of these things is not like the other?

This is the only case of deliberately poisoned Halloween candy:

In 1974, a father committed premeditated murder by lacing a package of Pixy Stix with cyanide, and then fed them to his 8-year-old son. The father wanted to collect life insurance money from his son’s death. That’s it – no malicious intent to plague the neighborhood with sudden deaths.

So, check the candy, make sure that it’s good, but don’t stress over it. Unless your uncle does heroin, your husband/father is a murderous psycho, or you’re eating some 2008 Pokemon lollipops, you should be fine.

Boy Locked In Coffin

Tuesday, October 4, police started a search for the parents who locked their 7-year-old boy in a coffin in the basement of their house. According to the boy’s statements, being was often locked in the coffin with nothing more than a diaper. The diaper was for if the boy escaped the coffin, since there was no bathroom in the basement. To heighten the fear, the parents told the boy that the basement was haunted by ghosts, and would often rattle chains outside the coffin.

Neighbors called the police when they heard the boy shouting. When the police arrived, the boy was alone, crying because he was hungry.

“We’re trying to locate the mom and step-dad to serve these warrants, but at this point we don’t know where they’re at,” said Detective Captain Al Leoncini. The warrants are for endangering the welfare of a child and unlawful restraint.

Wife Cooks Husband

In 1991, a woman tied up her newlywed husband, killed him, chopped up his body, and then churned it through a garbage disposal. Neighbors claimed they heard the disposal running for hours. When police discovered the husband’s body, they found his hands had been fried in oil, his head boiled and stuffed in the freezer, and various body parts either in garbage bags or mixed with leftover turkey.

A psychiatrist was brought in to testify that the wife had confessed to “cooking her husband’s ribs barbecue-style and tasting them…”

The wife claimed that her husband frequently sexually abused and raped her. In defense, she stabbed him with scissors, and then did all of the previously mentioned things. She also contacted two of her other boyfriends to help remove the husband’s teeth and dispose of the remains.

Now the wife is seeking parole from her 25-years-to-life sentence. Will she get it? I sure hope not, especially when the attorney defending the wife claimed that she “chopped up her husband in an effort to avoid meeting him in the afterlife in accordance with Egyptian mythology.”

Yeah, no thanks, let’s pass on the whole parole thing.

Anna Rexia

This bodacious bombshell of a costume comes equipped with loads of controversy. As the name hints, this costume embodies anorexia nervosa – you know, the eating disorder that leads to more deaths than any other mental disorder. Of course, if you glanced at it quickly, you would think it’s a sexy skeleton costume, not an eating disorder. Outside of the name, there isn’t much to be offended about. It really depends on whether you can stomach the joke.

Illegal Alien

Immigrant activists were not too happy with this grey-skinned, orange jumpsuit-wearing extraterrestrial. Take a gander at the item in his hand: a green card. When this costume came under criticism, William Gheen, president of Americans for Legal Immigration, said, “The only people getting upset are the hyper-sensitive, over-politically correct, pro-amnesty, illegal alien-supporting nuts.” Yup, this costume definitely reeks of controversy. Perfect!

Kung Fool

Equipped with loads of negative stereotypes, the Kung Fool costume has come under heavy attention of various Asian-American groups, who openly declare this costume as racist. I mean, it doesn’t take a genius to see all of those stereotypes. They’re right there – displayed in latex that easily fits over your head and allows for comfortable breathing. Just be careful not to run into someone who knows actual Kung Fu. They may kick your ass.

Vato Loco

Ah, Vato Loco, the crazy mask that spawned so much controversy within the Latino community. Honestly, what can we say about Vato Loco? We created it! One only has to look at the mask to see why someone would get angry – teardrop, spider web tattoo, bandanna, and the list goes on and on. Similar to the Kung Fool costume, this one was called out for being racist and reinforcing negative stereotypes. We’ll let you be the judge.

Child Terrorist

This costume is exploding with controversial potential! Get it? Exploding with controversial potential – the kid’s wearing a vest of explosives. No? Still don’t get it? Here, let me explain further: it’s a child wearing an explosive vest. Still don’t get it? Hm, let me try one more time: child, explosive vest, your family’s dead. Are we getting through to you? Great, I thought the terrorists won for a moment there.

“I used contact paper, tissue paper and modge podge for the eyes,” said the creator of this design. “I used cardboard, black paint, and duct tape for the rest! You can’t see them from the inside of the house because there are curtains behind them.”

If you are wondering what the costume looked like, we actually sell it – as in, we sold it to this ice cream store. Hilarious, yes, and we’re quite proud that one of our Halloween costumes can attract so much attention, even if it is accidental. (We’re thinking of renaming it the “Unintentionally Racist Ice Cream Cone.”) Anyway, here’s the picture that we showcase:

Nothing wrong there, right? The costume features an oversized vanilla ice cream cone with sprinkles on top – absolutely nothing racist. Unless, of course, you were standing in the sun all day and the cone began to sag, causing it to look more like the iconic image of a hooded Ku Klux Klan member.

The Florida store first noticed an issue when they saw a drop in business. But no matter how hard they searched, they could not find the problem. Eventually, customers called the store and yelled at them to take the mascot off the streets.

“We were just trying to get people to come in,” said Jasmine Gonzalez, store employee. “We thought it was something fun for people, but eventually people took it the wrong way.”

If you want a costume that is both appropriate for children and inappropriate for being accidentally racist, give this ice cream costume a swing.

Sends shivers up my spine. Anyway, Stephen King, the proclaimed master of horror, announced on September 26, 2011, that he is creating a sequel to The Shining, titled “Dr. Sleep.” The story follows Danny Torrance, the five-year-old from The Shining, now in his 40s. Danny uses his extraordinary powers to help terminally ill patients easily pass away, and that’s all we know so far.

Obviously, the novel is still in the writing/editing process, so we can only wait and hope it lives up to its predecessor’s success. Stephen King has delivered so many bestselling novels by now that one more should not be an issue. We’ll just have to wait and see!

First, let’s look at what is not a zombie: a Wal-Mart shopper.

He wants to eat your sales.

There he is – all of his wide-mouthed glory spewing into the world worse than an open wound. Somewhere inside that tanned, leathery bag of skin, past those fabulously white short-shorts, is a heartbeat that clings to life like a man falling over a cliff.

This, on the other hand, is the undead:

Very similar, but the dead body gives it away.

Note: With Halloween being so close, keep an eye on those individuals wearing zombie costumes. Zombies are cunning, mindless creatures, who could easily utilize Halloween’s allowance of undead paraphernalia as an opportunity to strike. One minute you’re handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, then those trick-or-treaters are running off with your hands.

Here are some signs and symptoms one may experience during his or her transformation into an undead abomination:

Eye crusties.

Lesions.

Facial gross stuff.

Poor taste in music.

Consumption of human flesh.

And racism.

If you see someone showing any of these signs or symptoms, be careful – you may be dealing with a zombie, or a total douchebag.

Your back, for example, is covered with “V” shaped lines, much like the one observed in this photo:

Typically, your chest, stomach, and sides have “S” shaped lines, while your head is covered in wavy patterns of Blaschko’s lines. However, some individuals simply have blobs or patches, not lines. Since the lines or blobs are usually invisible, there is no definite way to determine what kind of patterns your Blaschko’s lines follow. You just have to hope you have something awesome.

There are skin conditions and disorders that cause the lines to be visible. Again, the actual patterns and lines that become visible can vary greatly. Some individuals have intense cases, so their body actually looks striped like a zebra or tiger. There are others who only have a few spots on their ankle, arm, or shin. (If I had my way, I would have some visible lines. It would be like a tattoo – unique just for me.)

No one has yet to figure out why these lines form, or what purpose they serve. Alfred Blaschko, the man that discovered the lines in 1901, proposed that the lines had an embryonic origin, but he could not elaborate any further. He simply discovered them, proved through numerous clinical trials that the lines were there, and then left it for someone else to figure out – possibly due to a lack of technical advancement.

The Internet is an eternal rumor mill that can easily alter one’s life, either for better or worse. Glenn Beck, for example, was the receiver of the Internet’s attention when this question was brought forward: “Did Glenn Beck rape and murder a young girl in 1990?” So many individuals began to Google this question that “Glenn Beck murder” was the #1 search suggestion for anyone typing in “Glenn Beck.”

If you type “Keanu Reeves” into Google’s search bar, “Keanu Reeves immortal” is the third suggested search, and here’s why:

That is Paul Mounet, born in 1847, who became a doctor and a professional French actor. Mounet starred in numerous films, plays, and movies, building for himself a very prominent career as an actor. Mounet died of heart disease in 1922, but the Internet has taken upon itself to say that this fact is actually false. “Mounet’s body,” numerous websites claim, “was never found after his death, which, combined with his resemblance to Keanu, can only mean that Mounet is actually Keanu, who is immortal.” (We need to start a new line of Halloween costumes that specialize in obscure celebrity rumors.)

Right, because that’s not an illogical leap at all. Two pictures look alike and people are all of sudden claiming that the individual has found the fountain of youth, forever living and aging and blessing us average humans with their immortal presence.

I’ll just leave this here:

And yes, Keanu does have a remarkable resistance to aging, especially for someone living in a career field as stressful as acting. One only has to look at the picture below to see how little life’s worries have affected his skin complexion. Someone needs to find his secret and inform the rest of us.

It’s clearly obvious that Keanu is not an immortal being, since his skin does show small signs of aging. Unless, of course, the immortal trait is only an effect of a larger issue! But what could possibly allow one to age, yet also allow them to regain their youthfulness whenever desired? I might have to go ask vampire Nicolas Cage about that one.

“Personally, I believe it’s him and that he is some sort of walking undead/vampire, etcetera, who quickens/reinvents himself once every 75 years or so,” wrote Jack Mord on the eBay posting. “150 years from now, he might be a politician, the leader of a cult or a talk show host.”

The auction has since been taken down, but the photo was previously on sale for more than $1,000,000. The seller Jack Mord claimed that the photo was originally taken by Professor G.B. Smith, who, apparently, was a Confederate photographer that specialized in photographing prisoners of war during the Civil War.

“My theory is that he allows himself to age to a certain point,” wrote seller Jack Mord. “Maybe 70, 80 or so, then the actor ‘Nicolas Cage’ will ‘die’… but in reality, the undead vampire ‘Nicolas Cage’ will have rejuvenated himself and appeared in some other part of the world, young again, and ready to start all over.”

Mord ended the auction by writing, “Any serious potential buyer will be allowed to have a photo expert of their choice examine the original photograph before any money changes hands.”

As someone who has yet to appreciate a single Nicolas Cage movie after Conair, I really, really hope that he chooses a different career path next time. One simply has to look at this compilation of movie scenes of him freaking out to see why he needs not to be a movie actor. (Caution: Lots and lots of swears.)

At the core of Run For Your Lives are the basic marathon rules. There is a start, a finish, obstacles, multiple routes that you can follow, and competing racers. However, unlike a typical marathon, there are two additional factors: zombies and flag belts.

Every runner is given a flag belt with attached flags, similar to the kind worn during flag football. These flags indicate your health. The job of the individuals dressed in zombie costumes is to snatch away those flags. When all of your flags are gone, you die, and you are disqualified from the race. But fear not – there are health packages hidden throughout the course that will help keep you alive.

Completion of the race, including the twelve man-made and natural obstacles, entitles you to the post-race awards, which include:

• One free beer.
• Admittance into the Apocalypse Party.
• Advanced training for the actual Zombie Apocalypse.
• Medals signifying your survival of the race (or zombie transformation).
• Racing bib.
• Warwear performance tee.

The race is split between the age categories of 14 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, and 40 and older. There is also a separate military division for those truly hardcore individuals that want a real challenge. The top three men and top three women of each winning division will be invited back to play parts as the lead zombies for the next obstacle race. You can go from winning the race to destroying those that want to win.

You should, because that’s what we’re talking about today.

Herman Webster Mudgett, more commonly known as Dr Henry Howard Holmes, was one of America’s first documented serial killers. Before he was known as a serial killer, though, he was a conman that specialized in swindling people out of their money. Nothing too violent, mainly just shady business transactions.

With a mustache that villainous, there's no wonder he became a serial killer.

Herman graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School. However, Herman stole bodies from the school’s laboratory, mutilated them, then claimed that the people were accidentally killed, which allowed him to collect insurance money. Gruesome – yes – but nothing on the scale of mass murder. Not yet, anyway.

So let’s dig into Herman’s past and see what happened:

Herman traveled to Chicago in 1886. It was there that he found Dr E.S. Holton’s drugstore. Holton was suffering from cancer, so Holton’s wife ran the drugstore. Herman received a job at the store and proved to be an outstanding employee. With Holton’s wife grieving for her husband’s pain, Herman charmed her into selling him the store; however, Herman did not have enough money to purchase the store, so he used his outstanding previous record to convince Holton’s wife to loan him money. She agreed.

Oddly, though, when Holton died of cancer, Holton’s wife disappeared. Herman told inquisitors that she was visiting relatives in California. If people continued to ask, Herman said that she loved California so much that she decided to stay out there.

Herman then built his three-story castle on a lot of land across from the drugstore. The castle’s first floor housed Herman’s relocated drugstore, while the other floors were rented out as hotel rooms.

Here’s where it gets really, really strange:

The upper floors contained over one hundred windowless rooms. A large number of doorways opened to brick walls, stairways to nowhere, or impossibly angled hallways. Some doors only opened from the outside of a room. Nearly every room had a secret entrance. Herman repeatedly fired builders and hired new ones, so only he knew the castle’s layout. (Reminds me of the Winchester Mansion.)

When the hotel was finished, Herman selected mainly female guests to stay within the rooms, some of which were his past lovers or employees. He then tortured and killed them. According to Wikipedia, “Some were locked in soundproof bedrooms fitted with gas lines that let him asphyxiate them at any time. Some victims were locked in a huge soundproof bank vault near [Herman's] office where they were left to suffocate.”

Truly horrifying things, but it doesn’t end there.

The deceased bodies were dropped down a chute to the basement. It was in that basement that Herman stripped flesh from bone, dissected body parts, and crafted skeletal models. Those skeletal models were then sold to medical schools. Herman’s previously connections with medical schools made it very easy for him to sell his crafted skeletal models. Herman also owned two large furnaces for cremating bodies, along with a pit of acid, bottles of poisons, and a stretching rack. These aren’t Halloween props – this guy really owned a pit of acid.

So, next time someone tells you about a three-story murder castle, tell them to back off, you already know about it.

Great Halloween Grave Dig

Place: Pennsylvania

Known as “The World’s Only Vampire Hunt,” the Great Halloween Grave Dig is an adult competitive event that will have you howling with joy. Attending guests must venture through graveyards, woods, and other areas to find the event’s host, who is dressed as a vampire. According to the official site, the event is “an adventurous mental and physical romp.” The event is invite-only, with two teams winning the hunt and earning $350 per team. The Grave Digger’s Ball is held after the event.

New York’s Village Halloween Parade

Place: New York City – 6th Avenue from Spring Street to 21st Street
Date: October 31, 2011
Started in 1973, the parade began as a neighborhood walk from house to house, inviting adults and children to join. The second year saw the Theater of the New City step in, bringing the parade to a larger scale. The parade’s eighth annual event saw the size of the celebration reach 100,000. Now, 30 years later, the parade draws roughly 60,000 costumed participants and 2 million spectators, making it one of the largest parades in the world. Festival of the Dead

Place: Salem, Massachusetts
Date: October 1 – 31, 2011
Salem, Massachusetts, infamously known for its brutal witch trials, transforms its streets every year to become one of the largest annual Halloween events. The event spans the whole month of October, with events taking place on every single day. The events range from a Vampires’ Masquerade Ball to the Annual Psychic Fair and Witchcraft Expo. The place is also littered with haunted houses, more than enough to scare you stiff!

Parade of Lost Souls

Place: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Date: October 29, 2011
Ditching the traditional horror and fear aspect of Halloween, the Parade of Lost Souls celebrates the burning of fear with fire. Participants have been known to bring lanterns, dress in costume, and build shrines in Grandview Park. There are loads of individuals firedancing and burning symbolic items that represent fear. If you want to celebrate Halloween with a more traditional, less horrifying party environment, this is the event for you.

Models painted up in body paint, mandatory sexy Halloween costumes, and completely open bars and buffets, what more could you want from a Halloween party? The Playboy Mansion has been known to throw some of the wildest, most risqué parties ever to exist. Of course, the party better be amazing, since the tickets cost anywhere from $600 to $1,000+. You have to really, really love some sensational skin to attend these parties, or be a loaded celebrity.

2011 Gory Halloween Props

Bust out your bloody, gory Halloween props and go wild for a whole night. Let loose those morbid thoughts of creativity that scream and ache for the burning agony of torn flesh. Broken teeth, charred flesh, torn ligaments, and so much more, all right here, are waiting for your discovery. If you want to show off your sick love for horror, these gory Halloween props make it possible.

Their young, rambunctious energy leaves them vulnerable to the effects of boredom. While television and video games have helped alleviate these dull, uneventful fits of youthful boredom, they have not completely done away with them. There are still kids out there that find themselves pulling pranks or, in today’s case, trying to perform the “ultimate trick.”

And I’ve got to say, they definitely have the drive and determination to pull off this trick. Even after failing three times, these kids still return for another try. No Halloween props are involved, but it is still too astonishing for words.

Ah, so the “ultimate trick” is pulling the cloth off the table while leaving the items still on the table. Easy enough, right? I’ve seen this in movies, even tried to do it myself. I never got it right, of course, but let’s see if they can pull it off.

Bigger items, that’s definitely an improvement. The larger the item, the more likely it would be to stay on the table, I guess. Unfortunately, it also makes it more difficult to pull out the cloth. Nice try, though, kids. Let’s see what they do next time.

So close! Man, they were so close that time. Only a little more force and they are sure to pull off the “ultimate trick.” Keep trying, kids, I believe in you!

Some say this video’s fake. Sure, it might be, but it’s still hilarious.

“Prank” is putting this video heavily. No one was injured, and no one was shocked or appalled. If anything, these students just realized that their teacher is a total badass.

#4 – Trick or Treat with Timmy:

This video taught me that the older someone is, the longer it takes them to realize it’s a prank. The best reaction is the party debating who should touch the prop. “Joe, you’re the biggest guy here, so you have to touch him.”

I don’t understand what’s going on here, nor do I understand why everyone looks so nauseous. But damn it, it’s hilarious.

She looks just like my mother, but she’s an impostor! She’s some other woman pretending to be my mother.’”

When looking at the cause for Capgras Delusion, one must first look at prosopagnosia. Individuals with prosopagnosia are unable to consciously recognize faces, but they can still recognize other visual objects. (They can tell cat from cup, but not an anonymous woman from their mother.) In a 1984 study on prosopagnosia, it was shown that individuals with prosopagnosia had unconscious emotional reactions to the faces of their loved ones. Consciously, they could not visually recognize their loved ones. Unconsciously, they still held emotions to their loved one’s faces.

It has been hypothesized that Capgras Delusion mirrors the effects of prosopagnosia. Consciously, individuals with Capgras Delusion will visually recognize their loved one’s face – “I know this face!” Unconsciously, they hold no emotional connection to the face – “But something feels not quite right!” Thus, we have individuals recognizing their loved ones, without the emotional memories of why they recognize them – “I know this man, but he is not the man I know!”

But let’s go one step further:

Let’s say that a mother calls her son. The son suffers from Capgras Delusion. Hearing his mother’s voice on the telephone, the son recognizes that it is his mother – he fully believes that his mother is on the phone. They end their conversation, then the mother walks into the same room as the son. Even though he just heard her voice – fully believed it was her – the son cannot visually understand that the woman standing in front of him is his mother.

His mind literally cannot comprehend this fact.

That’s Capgras Delusion, and it’s one of the creepiest psychological phenomena that I’ve ever heard about.

On August 17th, “Naegleria fowleri,” or the brain-eating amoeba, claimed its second American victim this month. Christian Strickland, a 9-year-old, contracted an infection after enjoying some time at a fishing camp in Virginia, then passed away due to meningitis.

Naegleria fowleri is a parasite found in warm, stagnant water, such as freshwater lakes, ponds, and rivers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “[Naegleria fowleri] enters nasal passages…and migrates to the olfactory nerves, eventually invading the brain.” The parasite always causes meningitis, and the symptoms often include fever, nausea, stiff neck, and a front headache.

The mortality rate for individuals affected by Naegleria fowleri is 98%. But do not go freaking out: Naegleria fowleri is a rare parasite. Since 1998, only 65 individuals have perished from the brain-eating amoeba. You have a better chance of being struck by lightening than having your mind consumed by this microscopic monster. As long as you’re not sipping up swamp water, you should be fine.

There is a new trend sweeping through Scottsdale, Arizona, the place where money grows on trees and the women are made of enough plastic to be considered inhuman: teenage exorcists. Reverend Bob Larson of Spiritual Churches International has started a school specifically designed to train, educate, and arm exorcists. While teenage schoolgirls are not his target audience, he has this to say on the matter: “We have found that our female, teenage exorcists are particularly effective at curing the possessed.”

The girls attend exorcist classes, reading from Bibles and clutching crosses. These classes teach them the art of ‘curse-breaking,’ where they release individuals from the devil’s bonds. The more experienced girls teach the novices how to draw demons out of an individual using a list of demon names. These names help to provoke the demon, for there needs to be a sign of weakness for the exorcism to start.

“People do look a bit surprised when I arrive,” said Brynne Larson, daughter of Reverend Bob Larson. “When people call for an exorcist, they don’t picture a 16-year-old high school girl.”

Accompanying these girls on their exorcisms are two strong males, who will hold the possessed victim down, allowing the girl to draw the demon out. Since there is no protocol for how the exorcism has to take place, the girls often improvise. The tools within their exorcism tool kit – a Bible, holy water, and a cross – are the main means of driving demons from individuals.

“It can be dangerous,” said Brynne. “I have performed exorcisms on three hundred pound, six-foot-five men, and they can get violent.”

“It’s not unusual to be sworn at, spat at, I’ve even seen projectile vomit,” said Savannah Scherkenback, 19, one of the latest graduates from the exorcism school. Then she had this to say about her personal life: “I think Harry Potter and Twilight are instigators of evil. They nullify morality and just serve to hook people in with evil. I don’t watch any television at all. I’m much too busy praying and fighting the devil.”

It’s good to see that even brainwashed teenage exorcists believe that Twilight is evil. Way to go, girls!

Since rats are not the brightest of creatures, they panic and continue to pull away from each other, often resulting in even worse tangles. Compound this panic with multiple rats, possibly ten to twenty, and your nest of tangled cords is now a moving, chirping mound of furry flesh, who eventually starve to death.

Historically, the term “rat king” was used not to reference rats, but for people who lived off others. Fanny Mills, born in 1860, is one of the more infamous cases of Milroy’s disease. Both of Mills’ legs were affected by this dreaded disease, making it difficult to even walk around. No normal shoes would fit to Mills’ gargantuan feet, so shoes had to be specially tailored to her size. Each pair of shoes required three goat skins, with pillowcases acting as socks. Though her feet were clearly not the same size, Mills’s feet were said to measure approximately 19” long and 7” wide. Due to the fact that Mills weighed no more than 115 pounds, the size of her body seems to exaggerate the size of her feet. It’s the same phenomena that happens with Halloween prosthetics.

Mills went on to marry William Brown, the brother of her accompanying nurse. Brown was nearly twenty years older than Mills, but she must have been happy simply to enjoy the company of a romantic partner. The two went on to try for a child, but the only result was a stillborn. At the age of thirty-two, Mills passed away from cancer, without an heir to live on her bloodline.
